Based on more than ten years of research within leading research institutions in Denmark and krill oil from Aker, Krill A/S made proteomic analysis of the krill oil and conducted in vivo clinical trials on patients looking for indications concerning krill oil’s effect on preventing thrombosis. The clinical trial data provided documentation for the effect and the subsequent proteome analysis supported the findings. Krill A/S has filed patent applications covering the application of krill for prevention and / or treatment of thrombosis.

Traditional marine lipid extraction processes are based on significant thermal exposure of the krill material, dramatically reducing the therapeutic effects by reducing the bio-activity of the components. In partnership with Alfa Laval, Krill A/S developed and patented a novel on-board extraction process with low thermal exposure. Tests show that the indicated thrombosis-related therapeutic properties of krill oil can only be achieved with fresh krill raw material, made possible with Aker’s Eco Harvesting technology, and Krill A/S’ extraction process, in respect of which patent application has been filed.

Alfa Laval has been awarded a turnkey contract for the delivery of the pharma-grade process plant to be installed on-board the Saga Sea for the 2007 season, and Aker is currently in discussion with several well-reputed research institutions for the continued development and pre-clinical / clinical testing of the thrombosis preventing extracts
