Welcome to Aker Philadelphia Shipyard

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard (“APSI”) is a leading U.S. commercial shipyard constructing vessels for operation in the U.S. Jones Act market. It possesses some of the most modern shipyard facilities in the United States and has earned a reputation as the preferred provider of oceangoing merchant vessels.

Aker Philadelphia Shipyard is currently in the process of constructing twelve product tankers, of which two will be converted to shuttle tankers, for wholly owned subsidiaries of American Shipping Company and Overseas Shipholding Group.

All Vessels are scheduled for delivery through early 2011, securing the yard’s shipbuilding backlog in this period.

Did you know?:
  • The largest manufacturing business in the City of Philadelphia, we employ 1,200 workers and support another 7,000 indirectly.
  • A for-profit business, we generate $230 million annually to the regional economy; almost $9 million alone in City tax revenues. In a typical month, we spend $5-$7 million in wages, purchases and vendor contracts in the Delaware Valley region.
  • Since powering up in 2003, we have delivered – on time and on budget - 13 large ocean-going commercial vessels; representing more than 50% of the entire U.S. oceangoing commercial fleet production.
  • We are on schedule to deliver three more vessels by March 2011, completing our $1 billion order book.
  • Working with our labor unions, we have established a three-year apprenticeship program which recruits in the region, and provides salary, benefits, college credits and industrial skills training.
