Apprentice Cohort #10 Celebrated for CORE Values and Advancement

October 27, 2023

In October, members of Cohort 10 of Philly Shipyard’s Apprentice program were celebrated for completing the first 12-weeks of the welding apprenticeship, a distinguishing accomplishment for all apprentices.

Cohort 10 includes seven apprentices, all eager to move on to the next phases of their journeys. To celebrate their accomplishments, the cohort was treated to a team luncheon with department leadership, to honor each apprentice’s hard work and dedication to the shipyard and to each other.

During the luncheon, Training leadership were happy to recognize and award apprentices Justin Laurin and Emma O’Shaughnessy with Amazon gift cards for their perfect attendance demonstrating their commitment to the program and their careers at PSI.

This apprentice cohort also demonstrated ideal examples of PSI’s CORE values for which apprentices were celebrated for each of the values. Justin Laurin continuously cheered the rest of his cohort on as they obtained their ABS certifications. He was always positive, respectful, and caring of those around him. Romo Rogelio remained close with his production team cooperating and communicating what was happening and ensured that his teammates felt included. Jercai Madison-Mitchell responsibly followed protocol in reporting attendance and inappropriate behavior. Jercai showed training leadership that he could and will do the right thing on the job. Eric Tingle Jr. was honored for his positive progression and evolvement throughout the weld school to successfully obtain his welding (2G/3G) certification.

The celebration marked the beginning of the next phase of their time as apprentices at Philly Shipyard. They will now move on to the hands- on Production training portion of the program coupled with in-class learning opportunities for the remainder of their apprenticeship. Each member was welcomed into the PSI family with signature Welcome boxes, a hallmark for each Philly Shipyard employee. We are happy to have each apprentice and look forward to watching them progress in the yard.

Cohort 10 is set to complete the three-year apprenticeship program in October 2026. The Winter 2024 Apprenticeship Application for Cohort 13 is currently open through November 7. Those accepted into the program will begin on January 29, 2024, and will train, work, and earn college credits throughout their time as an apprentice at the Philly Shipyard.
